Background

Plato's Allegory of the Cave is a thought experiment to get us to think about the role of education and ignorance on human advancement and progress and personal self-growth.

In the allegory - a "hero" has lived his entire life in a cave. His neck and feet are chained and he is only able to look forward.

There is light coming in from the mouth of the cave, and there are "unknown and unseen" entities who hold up objects that cast shadows on the wall in front of the "hero" (and others like him). To the hero - these "shadows" of the shapes are all they he knows.

These shadow shapes are, in effect, his entire reality. He has no reason to believe that there are others who are puppeting these shapes and that what he is seeing is merely a low-resolution, 2-dimensional representation of the feature-rich objects being waved around behind him.

The allegory goes on to discuss a time in which this hero breaks free of his chains, makes it out of the cave. And, upon his eyes adjusting to the light, realizes that the shadows have all been a projection and that life has more richness and depth than simply the shadows on the walls that he knew for his entire life.

This gets at the role of education and enlightenment on our understanding of the universe and the world around us. Initially we are quite ignorant to how the world works but if we seek out answers and the truth we can realize that the world is much more rich and has much more depth than we initially thought or believed (or were told).

The allegory goes on to discuss the attempts of the hero to turn around go back into the cave and tell all the fellow prisoners what he has seen. It highlights the likely futility of this act as, not long ago, shadows were also all that he had known. And if someone had come and tried to tell him that there is more to the world than shadows then he would have scoffed and laughed this maniac right back out the door.

The Question

Now, with the background understood. My question for you is...

In the allegory of the cave why is it assumed that there are people who are “puppeting” the shadows against the wall? These people are not the prisoners and they are not the hero?

Are they “heroes” who, in realizing the futility of bringing the prisoners to the light, now take advantage of those who remain prisoners? Maybe they are also children of these “puppeteers” who were born in that limbo, not fully understanding the life of the prison nor the one under the sun.

Their motives could be disparate – but why always behind the prisoners? Why speak through voices and shadows? What would happen if they stepped out from behind the veil and looked the prisoners head on.

I don't know who these puppeteers are. I don't know if they are real or simply exist in this allegory. But...this is a well known thought experiment with a broad "assumption" that tends to go without any discussion or exploration.

So, what does this mean to you? Do puppeteers exist?

If so, what role do they play in maintaining the ignorance of the masses? Is there a moral responsibility they have to wield their power with care?

What do you think?
