Entropy
Both high and low entropy are disorganized. It’s in the in between when patterns emerge. Patterns emerge due to the interactions of one body with another. The individual bodies maintain their properties until the merging with the other body is complete. This is friction. Pre-existing boundaries lead to unique interactions between bodies – just as the milk forms nebulaic structures in the tea before turning the entire tincture opaque.
Friction is when an individual body interacts with another. Increasing friction decreases entropy. More friction, less randomness.
We as humans can guide friction between bodies thus harnessing the ability to control, and create, entropic states.
(Our consciousness seem to live outside the entropic order.)
Regardless of the what, the why, or the how – we have the ability to control friction between bodies. We can use this seeming magical power to continue to build things to help us understand what we are. We may not have the answers now, but we have the ability to drive ourselves towards a state of understanding, a one that is growing exponentially faster to this day.
What is the ultimate goal? Is there any impact that we have on the entropy of the universe. Do we futilely battle our inevitable dispersion by decreasing entropy that we CAN control in the world around us? Futilely doing our part to extend the inevitable death of universe.
Or do we speed it up. Do we accept our fate and rush to the endline?
There is no morality espoused in either one of these directions – insomuch as one does not purposefully or continually negligently decide the direction for another. These remain as simply different and quite competing philosophies.
Or do we simply take the powers we have now to make our time here as beautiful and pain-free for ourselves as possible. To do our best to improve the spaceship we live on for ourselves now – but more importantly for the future generations who will continue to prod on in the same futile manner.
If dispersion and death is inevitable then is there worth in extending it? Is it worth worrying about finding ways to extend it? Is the ultimate end game to win against entropy? To build a self-preserving system that will travel on into infinitude?
Trying is all that we can do – if we so choose that path. We do not know if we can overcome – we do not know if there is value – but we know that trying our best for ourselves and others is something we feel to be worthwhile. And that if it is at all possible then it will not be in our lifetime but will be in the lifetime of one of our inevitable ancestors? And will getting them to that point not require a spaceship that remains habitable? We must build the bridge for our children and grandchildren.
Regardless of if you are speeding it up or slowing it down – encroaching on another’s choice shall be avoided. And while the flavor differs from consciousness to consciousness, the reverence for others remains constant.
So, what are you? A speed-up enjoyer? Or a slow-down apologist.
